The BUZZ LIFE project – Integrated actions to safeguard pollinators in urban and peri-urban areas – addresses the severe decline of pollinators, particularly wild bees (Apoidea), by implementing actions in urban and peri-urban areas of Italy, Cyprus, France, and Greece.
BUZZ LIFE aims to improve knowledge of the distribution and ecology of pollinators, strengthen their conservation in urbanized environments, and improve local governance, with particular emphasis on reducing pesticide use.
Monitoring through technological innovationThe project uses innovative monitoring tools based on the Internet of Things (IoT) and remote sensing. One of these is Spectrum, a monitoring system developed by the project partner 3Bee that can record the acoustic signatures of pollinators. In addition to bioacoustic sensors, Spectrum includes technology for calculating the Pollinator Abundance Index (PAI).
Furthermore, the use of satellite imagery combined with artificial intelligence (AI) can provide valuable information on habitat suitability for target species, including nectar potential, water availability and other factors influencing the availability of resources for pollinators.
“Buzz lines” for pollinator-friendly citiesThe project’s main actions include the development of green infrastructure, such as “buzz lines,” pollinator gardens and refuge oases, designed to increase ecological connectivity between natural and semi-natural areas. The project will also support the preparation of Local Pollinator Action Plans to be adopted by municipal authorities.
Through the active involvement of local communities and the creation of a network of pollinator-friendly cities, BUZZ LIFE aims to increase the diversity and abundance of pollinators in the target areas and improve awareness among citizens and local authorities. In doing so, the project seeks to promote lasting changes in urban green-space policies and management practices.
